Shortly after leaving active duty service in the Army, Derik began working at the Des Moines Vet Center. He earned his Master's Degree in Public Administration from Drake University in 2006 with the intention of working administratively in the health care industry. However, he recognized that his love for veterans and his ability to understand people aligned with the great need for skilled therapists, so he decided to switch gears and become a therapist. After marrying his wife, he moved to Michigan and earned a degree in clinical social work from Grand Valley State University, graduating in 2009. While Derik was working at the Grand Rapids Vet Center and later the Department of Veterans Affairs, he continued his education, and earned his PhD in Public Administration, focusing on how military leadership affects mental health outcomes for OEF/OIF veterans.
Currently Derik resides with his wife and six children in Michigan.
